Pointer Salutes: Sona MedSpa: Medical procedures in a spa environment Dana Knight, general manager, says, “I understand how clients feel. I used to be embarrassed myself.” Knight was having treatments herself when she learned of the job opening. “I was in medical supply sales and looking for a change. Now I enjoy helping people, making them feel better about themselves.” Knight also manages a Sona MedSpa in Virginia Beach and commutes from her home in Norfolk. Sona is a national franchise, with 40 independently owned locations. Oyster Point’s central location and City Center’s upscale image are pluses for reaching Sona’s niche market. Sona’s main business is laser hair removal. Hair can be painlessly removed from anywhere on the body (except very near the eyes) for all skin types. Clients are all ages, men and women. There is a specific laser for darker skin tones. Hair falls out in 2 to 3 weeks. Regrowth is disabled and repeat treatments result in a permanent reduction of regrowth. All treatments are administered by licensed nurses under the supervision of a medical doctor. Safety is a high priority. Knight says, “A new client begins with a free consultation. Most people are concerned about what procedures will help and what the cost will be.” Sona offers financing and has specials every month, such as package deals. There are also corporate accounts with employee discounts. Skin rejuvenation is another large part of Sona’s business. The exclusive SonaSmart Analysis System uses digital imaging technology to identify facial features that could benefit from a treatment protocol. Examples are lines and wrinkles, sun damage, age spots and acne scars. “Before and after” pictures show clients the benefit of treatments such as laser, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. “We are also very effective in removing tattoos and spider veins,” says Knight. Every skin rejuvenation treatment is followed by an ultrasonic facial treatment. Sona also has a follow-up line of skin care products. Sona offers the popular BOTOX treatment, administered by a medical doctor. There is also Jurederm (hyaluronic acid), an injectable gel which corrects wrinkles. These procedures require repeat treatments after several months. Sona employs four nurses, two consultants and two office staff members. It is open for extended evening hours and on Saturdays. There are five treatment rooms in the large, maze-like office, including private dressing rooms. Clients are offered tea and cookies and a spa robe with slippers. |
