The Silver Lining: Hi Ho Silver Moves to City Center
By Sara Johnston
Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it’s off to find some handmade silver we go. Hi Ho Silver, specializing in unique, handmade jewelry and gifts, recently moved from Hilton Village to Oyster Point. “We simply needed more space to display our pieces,” says Leslie Sink, who co-owns the store with her husband, Chris. The store jumped from about 400 square feet in Hilton Village to 1,000 square feet in its new City Center location, making it their flagship store.
The first Hi Ho Silver retail showroom opened in Hilton Village six years ago, but not as a brand new business. Hi Ho Silver was a traveling family-owned business for 19 year prior to the Sinks purchasing the business from their friends and opening the first storefront. “We wanted to develop retail stores and showrooms rather than travel around,” says Sink.
With their local success in Newport News and always expanding merchandise it was time for a move. “We felt City Center would be a good fit because we could stand toe to toe with other national retailers. City Center is unique because it’s a business park,” Sink says. “Businessmen and women can come in and get a quick gift or do a little shopping on their lunch break.”
For the exceptionally busy customer, Hi Ho Silver will accept phone orders and even deliver to businesses in Oyster Point.
The couple is so pleased with the City Center location that their Virginia Beach store was recently remodeled in its image. Plans to remodel the Ghent location are already underway.
Everything found at Hi Ho Silver is guaranteed to be handmade, unique and affordable. In addition to silver jewelry, Hi Ho Silver has an extensive line of pewter ware, baby gifts, men’s gifts, wedding gifts, engraving services, and even a little gold. “Our customers dictate what we do and if they want to see some gold, we’ll add some gold... our customers have demanded change and we listen to them,” says Sink.
So what sets Hi Ho Silver apart from your average jewelry store? “Our wide variety and customer service,” says Sink, who admits that good customer service is a dying art.
In addition to providing customers with excellent quality and customer service, Hi Ho Silver believes it is very important to support local fundraisers and charities. “We try to donate to most fundraisers,” says Sink. Hi Ho Silver doesn’t just contribute money, but also gift certificates and product.
When the Sinks aren’t hard at work with their upcoming plans for Hi Ho Silver, they keep extremely busy with their 19 month-old twins, Charlie and Holle. “It’s the best hobby of all,” says Sink of her two children.
When asked about her plans for the future Sink laughs, “We have plans, but I just can’t tell ya.” She admits that they would like to open two or three new stores every year, possibly expanding outside of Virginia. “We always have surprises and new and exciting things at Hi Ho Silver,” says Sink. |
