More than a high-speed copying service, Bill and Jayne Sullivan’s Kwik Kopy is a full-service printing facility. “We put ink on paper,” says Bill Sullivan, summing up the variety of services they offer. “Customer satisfaction is our primary goal. We do everything in our power to keep our customers.” In fact, many longtime customers have become friends. Some have been coming to Kwik Kopy since it opened 16 years ago.
“When the purchasing person in a company changes, we meet with the replacement and make sure we keep the business,” says Bill Sullivan.
Established in Oyster Point in 1991, the Sullivans relocated from Thimble Shoals Boulevard about a year ago to 11835 Canon Blvd., Suite C103. “We closed at the old location on Friday and reopened at the new one on Monday,” Jayne Sullivan says proudly. The new facility is roomy, about 2,600 square feet, and offers more space for the Sullivans’ five employees.
Collectively, the Sullivans and their employees have more than 120 years of experience in the printing business. John, the production manager, has been with the company from the beginning. “We try to limit our customers’ exposure to competition,” says Bill. Pickup and delivery service is offered and 90 percent of the company’s 1,100 customers have never been in the shop. A salesperson visits, offers design services as needed, helps with choices and delivers the final product.
The Sullivans are originally from New York City. Bill worked for McGraw Hill for 20 years, Jayne for Union Carbide for 23 years. When they decided to move, they carefully considered a number of locations, from Cape Cod to Florida. They had vacationed in Williamsburg, and a marketing study identified Newport News as a good opportunity. They have seen some “amazing changes” in their years here and continue to be satisfied with their Oyster Point location. “We’ve found our niche,” Jayne says.
As president, Bill Sullivan oversees operations. He does all of the job estimates. “Each job is different. It’s like starting over and the chance for error is always there,” he says. Jayne manages the finances, oversees the front counter and “whatever else is needed.”
Married 21 years, the Sullivans are not planning to retire. Bill says, “We leave every day at 4 p.m. and don’t work on weekends. We never talk business at home, so we have been able to ‘retire’ while still working!” Their home in Williamsburg is their “vacation spot.”
“I have been able to convince my family to visit me here,” says Bill. “So we rarely return to New York.”
At home, the Sullivans enjoy reading and cooking. “Wandering aimlessly through a supermarket is therapy for me,” smiles Bill.
