KITCHEN DESIGN: Always cooking up new creations

Want a new look in the room where you spend the most time? Brothers-in-law Darrell Cunningham and David Staley opened Kitchen Design Inc. on 723 Blue Crab Rd. of Newport News in 1989 and have been creating fresh, new looks to kitchens for the past 14 years.

Both Cunningham and Staley were familiar with woodworking and cabinet building, which enabled them to expand their business quickly. Darrell Cunningham is the owner of Kitchen Design and David Staley is general manager.

Since the inception of the company, many exciting changes have occurred with Kitchen Design Inc. Some time early next year, a new multi-million dollar facility will be completed, enabling these enthusiastic executives to enter a new phase of doing business. The two-story brick building will add office space, warehouse sections for interior design, architectural and decorative services, storage and manufacturing centers, and much more. Cunningham and
Staley both talked excitedly about the completion of the new unit. Cunningham remembers when his business started and cannot believe how the business has grown over the past 14 years. Cunningham says he is extremely proud of the new expansion and is ready and eager to do more business.

Cunningham and Staley are proud of the company’s expansion, but also maintain an organized area of working space in which they and their 69 employees work at this time. Cunningham is most proud of the fact that all their products are manufactured in house. “We fabricate everything from start to finish,” says Staley.

In the back of the company’s largest warehouse, a two-story mezzanine stores much of the lumber used for production. Also, there is a spray room attached to the hardware room and an upstairs section as well. The front of the building houses most of the office space and design center area. Since the company is expanding into interior design, a portion of the front office space displays attractive wall decor features, and the front entrance reveals some of the company’s ability to create custom cabinets and counter work.

Kitchen Design Inc. focuses primarily on the manufacturing and installation of kitchen cabinets and counter tops. Bathroom detailing is also a specialty with residential clients being the company’s primary focus. Commercial clients, however, are still an important component of the business.

“The majority of our residential work entails the manufacturing and installation of our products,” says Staley. With the company’s continuing growth, the future of Kitchen Design looks promising for all involved in the business’ new advancements.

Cunningham and Staley are both incredibly dedicated to their business. Both men maintain a close relationship with their family ties and business relationship as well. Staley, 46, is a graduate of Lynchburg College, is married with three children. Staley enjoys his career as well as going to the beach and boating with his family.

Cunningham, 38, is also a family man with four children. In his spare time, he also enjoys spending time with his friends and family.

It’s fun, agree the two businessmen. Next year will be an even busier year and Cunningham and Staley are ready to roll up their sleeves and create new kitchen designs for Kitchen Design, Inc.
